Why the Corgi is a model dog

The Queen loves Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and it is easy to see why. They are agreeable little things: small, friendly and fun to walk. But, for the first time in its history, the breed has been listed as "vulnerable". The reason is thought to be that they are associated too much with the older variety of owner. They lack the street cred of, say, the French Bulldog, which is so popular with celebrities.

Britain should encourage the revival of this nobler dog. Perhaps the Corgi is best branded as a patriotic breed, representing our island spirit. They don't stand for fuss; require little grooming; and can be trained to get larger animals to do their bidding. They are an idyllic accompaniment to the countryside, too. Writer Tasha Tudor said that at sunset, "they glow like copper. Then they come in and lie in front of the fire like a string of sausages." Perhaps the slogan for these austere times should not be "Keep Calm and Carry On" but "Keep Calm and Keep a Corgi"?
